Preparing your artwork correctly is one of the most important steps before ordering DTF transfers. If you create your designs or gang sheets in Canva, downloading the file with the right settings helps preserve image quality and ensures that unwanted backgrounds are not included in your print.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to download a high-resolution, transparent PNG from Canva and prepare your DTF gang sheet for printing.
DTF printing can reproduce detailed, colorful artwork, but the final print quality depends heavily on the file you provide.
For most print applications, 300 DPI at the actual print size is recommended. Your artwork should also have a transparent background unless the background is intentionally part of the design.
It is important to understand that simply exporting a file at 300 DPI does not automatically make low-quality artwork high resolution.
If an individual design is already blurry, pixelated, or too small when you upload it into Canva, exporting the finished gang sheet at 300 DPI will not restore the missing detail. Canva can export your completed file at a higher resolution, but it cannot recreate image information that was not present in the original artwork.
Always check the quality of each design before building your gang sheet.
Before downloading your artwork, give your Canva project a clear and recognizable file name.
This may seem like a small step, but it becomes especially helpful when you are working with multiple gang sheets, customer designs, or different versions of the same artwork.
A descriptive file name also makes it easier to identify the correct file when uploading your gang sheet for printing.
When your design is ready, click Share in the upper-right corner of Canva and select Download.
Under File Type, choose PNG.
PNG is the preferred format for many DTF printing projects because it supports transparent backgrounds while maintaining high image quality.
Next, move the Size slider all the way to the maximum available setting.
The goal is to export enough pixels to achieve approximately 300 DPI at the actual size of your gang sheet.
For example, if your Canva gang sheet is 22 × 60 inches and Canva exports it at:
6,600 × 18,000 pixels
the resolution is:
6,600 ÷ 22 = 300 DPI
18,000 ÷ 60 = 300 DPI
This means the exported file is 300 DPI at its intended 22 × 60-inch print size.
This is one of the most important things to remember when preparing DTF gang sheets.
A 300 DPI gang sheet does not automatically mean every design inside the gang sheet is high quality.
If you place a low-resolution image into Canva and enlarge it, that image may still appear blurry or pixelated even though the completed gang sheet is exported at 300 DPI.
Think of the final gang sheet resolution and the quality of the individual designs as two separate things.
Canva can help you export the entire gang sheet at the correct resolution. However, the artwork placed inside that gang sheet should already be clear and high quality at the size you intend to print it.
Before downloading your file, zoom in and inspect your designs carefully.
If Canva displays a Quality setting, select High.
Avoid unnecessary compression when preparing files for DTF printing. Compression may reduce file size, but it can also reduce image quality.
For print-ready artwork, preserving as much detail as possible is usually the better option.
Before downloading, enable Transparent Background.
This is especially important for logos, graphics, text designs, and gang sheets where you do not want a white rectangle printed behind your artwork.
A transparent PNG keeps only the artwork itself while removing the unwanted background.
If a colored or solid background is intentionally part of your design, you should leave it in place. Otherwise, transparent artwork is generally preferred for custom DTF transfers.
Once your settings are complete, click Download.
After the PNG has downloaded, open the file before placing your order.
Check that the artwork looks clear and that there is no unwanted white or colored background around your designs. Zoom in on smaller details, text, and edges to make sure nothing looks noticeably blurry or pixelated.
Taking a few seconds to inspect the file can prevent printing problems later.
Once you have downloaded and checked your transparent PNG, you can send your completed gang sheet directly to Sam’s Transfers for printing.
